ACREY'S ARTIST STATEMENT |
||||||||
All cultures throughout history have produced art. Art begins with the impulse to realize form and order out of mere matter. To me, art photography is the sole medium that allows the artist a special window into reality. The fine art photographer must use that reality in order to capture his vision of the intrinsic beauty and form that his chosen subject has to offer. In my fine art photography, I leave behind the tendency to convey the obvious. Mostly I'm intrigued by the smaller details of my subjects. Discovering the "abstractions within the whole" has always fascinated me. In my fine art photography, I unleash the boundaries of my subject, so that I'm able to surpass the ordinary and obvious. The true art of photography is being able to create a secondary reality within the inherent reality dictated by the medium. Once that secondary reality is revealed, I know I have transcended that composition, that particular moment in time. It takes on a life of its own, with a new purpose and sense of being. Thus, my image is a creation that has altered reality within the confines of reality. Previously irretrievable moments in time became isolated into a tangible form. My vision is now solidified and becomes a part of the past, seen only in the images. The West with its wide-open spaces and mammoth rock walls conjures up thoughts of unbridled freedoms. My subjects seem to beg for larger image sizes. For me, it seems unnatural to confine my subjects to traditional photographic print sizes and structures. I prefer to present my prints without boundaries. Also my larger-than-the-West prints require a pristine view without glass, so I have pioneered the archival, oversized, print designed as a continuance of my vision. I have allowed the image to dictate the presentation dimensions. All of my Fine Art images are created utilizing the following camera formats: 4 x 5 format-85% of the time, medium format-10% of the time and 35mm-5% of the time, and being a purist, what you see in my images is what I saw or visualized through the viewfinder. |
